Far superior to electric blankets

by Paul M. 2007-01-03, 39 people found this review helpful
Even though I live in a drafty colonial stone farmhouse, I didn't realize until recently that my sleep problems during the winter months were so temperature related. Sweating under down comforters, having electric blankets slide off the bed and awakening to my feet hitting cold spots were the culprits until I purchased a heated mattress pad. The Sunbeam king sized model proved to be the best value with its dual 10-step controls, even heating and automatic shut-off after ten hours. With the heat emanating from underneath, the entire bed surface is pleasantly warm and I am comfortable all night with only a thin acrylic blanket and cotton spread to contain the heat. I've found that setting the thermostats on 'High' about an hour before bed and turning them back to '3' or '4' while sleeping works best. One minor problem is that the controls don't start the coils heating in the lowest temperature settings. They should be set at '8' or above to first warm the bed and then moved back for a night free of cold spots. Other than this minor issue, I'm extremely pleased with both the comfort and my improved quality of winter sleep.

Happy With the one I bought 2 Years Ago

by MI Mud Puppy 2007-10-17, 17 people found this review helpful
Because Sunbeam seems to have changed the specs since I bought mine I only gave this version 4 stars as I obviously haven't got the exact same model. Mine has 20 temperature settings not 10 and a pre-heat setting that heats up the pad quickly and then powers down to your selected setting. (I assume the new version doesn't pre-heat per its own description and the other review. I can guess only that this simpler system makes it cheaper to manufacture and keeps the price under $100, too bad.)

However, I do like being able to turn the house thermostat down to 60 at night and use this to keep my husband and me toasty warm. Plus with those dual controls he can have his side warmer than I like.

I have also machine washed mine once so far (gentle cycle) with no problems.

I think having heat at the bottom makes a lot more sense than an electric blanket since as we know, heat rises. Why heat the room air? Electricity is not cheap.

I also bought a queen size for the guest room. Have had no complaints about the cold. I am considering buying another.

Sunbeam heated mattress pad buzzes!

by Glen R. Fotre 2007-11-13, 19 people found this review helpful
We are now on our third (3rd) queen size heated mattress pad (the first two were replaced under warrantee) and this is the first one where we have experienced this problem. I'm thinking that the wires extend too far up under the pillows as I can hear buzzing from the pad through the pillow when the heat is on and then it stops when the thermostat says it is warm enough. I lost about 1 1/2 hours of sleep last night due to this. Sunbeam says "put a blanket over it"! That didn't work. I'm calling them again tomorrow and we'll see what the next 'fix' is!

Perfect

I love this heated mattress pad, it's everything I hoped it would be. It heats up in no time flat and has an auto off timer after 10 hours. My only concern before buying it was whether or not I would be able to feel the coils. The coils in an electric blanket I had owned previously were quite noticable, but you can't even feel the ones in the mattress pad. I look forward to going home and hopping into a warm bed every night with this mattress pad. Buy it!

Just what I needed for a cold New England Winter!

by S. Anderson 2009-12-30, 3 people found this review helpful
Wow, just what I needed for a cold New England Winter. I purchased the King Size mattress pad and it comes with the dual controls. It fit on my mattress perfectly. I was worried I would be able to feel the coils, but you cannot feel them. Heating the bed from the mattress is better than heating it with an electric blanket. It's like a heated car seat, nice. When I go to bed, I put it on #10 and it quickly heats the bed. Then I either shut it off or turn it down to #3 depending on how cold it is outside. I used to go to bed with socks, PJ bottoms, t-shirt and long sleeve top just to stay warm. Now I am back to my comfortable underwear and t-shirt.

The only thing I did not like was the control pad did not sit on my night stand the way I wanted it to because the wires tended to pull it towards the edge. I fixed it by nailing a wire tack to the back of my night stand, securely holding the wires in place so it cannot pull on the controller.

I highly recommend this product if you have a cold bedroom. I cannot believe I've been living with a cold bed for all these years.

Sweet Dreams

The subtle self adjusting heat provided by this mattress pad keeps me comfy cozy slumber all night long. I love the dual controls because my husband doesn't like the heat. I don't wake up in the middle of the night anymore with cold feet. I like the auto off functionality because I bought one for each of my kids and they can't remember to shut anything off. Obviously I am a huge fan of the product...since I bought one for everyone in the house after I fell in love with mine. I don't have to keep the heat on in the bedrooms at night and I think that will eventually net me a savings in my heating bill.

Warm sheets!

by SueBee 2008-01-29, 4 people found this review helpful
We had one of these heated mattress pad while living in Atlanta - didn't think we would need it in southern Arizona. Boy were we wrong. The desert does get quite chilly at night and, now that we are a bit older than 'middle age', getting into bed with the sheets warm is fabulous.

King Mattress pad is great!

by Robert McHenry 2009-11-02, 1 people found this review helpful
Purched after upgrading to a king from a queen. Pad works as described. No problems what so ever. We really like the auto shutoff feature! When younger kids use mattress pads they have a bad habit of leaving on ALL DAY! Auto shut-off takes care of that! Very satisfied with purchase and performance!

The Sunbeam heated mattress pad

by Seymour M. Pelton 2010-04-13, 0 people found this review helpful
I had always been an electric blanket user in the past but had never enjoyed the luxury of warm sheets on a cold night that I do now. The other comments that I have read suggesting turning the control to a higher setting initially and then turning it down upon getting into bed is right on as it has worked well with me. I have not heard any sounds whatsoever coming from the mattress pad nor do I feel any of the heating wires that were mentioned in some of the comments. All in all I am pleased with my mattress heating pad and leaving my electric blanket unplugged.
